Weekly Summary
Total inspections: 57 | A grades: 54 | B grades: 2 | C grades: 1 |
Subway downgraded to C despite higher inspection score
Subway #29005, at 970 E. Liberty St. in York, received a C with 91 points during an Oct. 27 follow-up inspection, one week after receiving a B with 84 points.
Although the restaurant's numerical score improved by seven points, inspectors downgraded its letter grade because multiple priority food-safety violations had not been adequately corrected.
Inspectors again documented improper refrigeration temperatures, including sliced deli meats at 47 degrees Fahrenheit, sliced cheese and cut tomatoes at 46 degrees, and lettuce at 44 degrees. All exceeded the required maximum cold-holding temperature of 41 degrees.
The report also identified sticker residue on food containers stored as clean and the absence of valid food-handler and certified food protection manager documentation. The certification deficiencies were classified as consecutive violations that could be referred for enforcement.
The establishment also lacked sanitizer test strips, which the inspector provided during the visit.
The refrigeration and sanitizer testing issues were corrected during the inspection, but the residue on food containers remained unresolved. Another follow-up inspection was required within 10 days.
Yoshi Ramen cited for food temperatures, sanitation violations
Yoshi Ramen, at 2435 Highway SC 160 W. in Tega Cay, received a B with 82 points during a Nov. 2 routine inspection. Inspectors documented improper food temperatures, inadequate sanitizing procedures and several equipment and cleanliness violations.
Inspectors found chicken sitting on a preparation table at 60 degrees Fahrenheit, diced chicken in a walk-in cooler at 50 degrees and an opened container of soy sauce labeled for refrigeration at 80 degrees. All exceeded the required maximum cold-holding temperature of 41 degrees.
An employee was observed washing a cutting board without properly sanitizing it. Inspectors also found personal medication stored above and alongside dishes in the kitchen.
Additional violations included a rear door left open with holes in its screen, improperly stored tongs, rust and debris on walk-in cooler shelving and dirt buildup on the walk-in freezer floor. The establishment also could not provide food-handler documentation during the inspection.
Inspectors found that the three-compartment sink was not large enough to fully immerse the largest equipment and utensils. A spray nozzle extending below the sink's flood level was identified as a consecutive backflow-prevention violation that could be referred for enforcement.
The improper food temperatures, cutting board sanitation and medication storage violations were corrected during the inspection. The sink-size and backflow-prevention problems remained unresolved, and a follow-up inspection was required within 10 days.
Hot Dog Depot cited for improper food temperatures, storage
Hot Dog Depot, at 106 Clebourne St., Suite 101, in Fort Mill, received a B with 86 points during an Oct. 30 routine inspection. Inspectors documented improperly refrigerated food, raw hamburger patties stored above ready-to-eat hot dogs and food held beyond its required discard date.
Several foods in a reach-in cooler exceeded the maximum cold-holding temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit, including beef hot dogs and corn dogs at 52 degrees, pimiento cheese at 50 degrees, coleslaw and bratwurst at 49 degrees, sliced tomatoes at 48 degrees and sliced cheese at 47 degrees.
Inspectors also found beef hot dogs, jalapeño hot dogs and smoked bratwurst held beyond their designated discard dates. Additional violations included dented cans on a storage shelf and sanitizer solution measuring below 25 parts per million.
The report indicated that several violations, including improper refrigeration temperatures, raw meat storage and expired food, remained uncorrected during the inspection. The dented cans were addressed.
A follow-up inspection was required within 10 days. Hot Dog Depot received an A grade on Nov. 2, according to the subsequent inspection listing. A numerical score was not provided.
Circle M returns to A following last week's B
Circle M Food Shop #46, at 1662 E. Alexander Love Hwy. in York, received an A during a Nov. 2 follow-up inspection after earning a B with 85 points on Oct. 26.
The previous inspection identified improper food handling, missing date markings, a blocked handwashing sink and other sanitation violations. The new listing does not provide a numerical score for the A-grade follow-up.

Source: South Carolina Department of Agriculture inspection activity. Each inspection entry is counted separately, including repeat visits.
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture assigns letter grades based on food-safety inspections. Follow-up inspections generally occur after violations identified during an earlier inspection and should not be interpreted as new routine inspections. Letter grades may also reflect unresolved violations rather than numerical scores alone.
