York County Food Grades: Two York Establishments Receive B Grades; Clover Restaurants Return to A

Two York food establishments received B grades during Oct. 20–26 inspections, while two Clover establishments cited last week earned A grades on follow-up inspections.

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture reported 76 food establishment inspections in the supplied Oct. 20–26 activity, with 74 A grades and two B grades. Subway #29005 in York received the lowest score, 84, followed by Circle M Food Shop #46, also in York, at 85.

Subway cited for improper food temperatures

Subway #29005, 970 E. Liberty St. in York, received a B (84) during an Oct. 20 routine inspection. Inspectors measured meatballs at 125 degrees Fahrenheit, below the required 135 degrees for hot holding. Cold foods above the 41-degree maximum included sliced roast beef at 58 degrees, turkey and cooked chicken at 55 degrees, ham at 54 degrees, tomatoes at 46 degrees and lettuce at 44 degrees. Sliced cheese and deli meats in the walk-in cooler also exceeded the limit.

Inspectors found bleach stored near bread containers and a microwave, sticker residue on containers stored as clean, missing sanitizer test strips and a hose resting in a mop sink. The establishment could not provide valid food-handler or certified food protection manager documentation; both were marked as consecutive violations potentially subject to enforcement referral. Most cited conditions were corrected during the inspection, but residue on the containers was not. A follow-up was required within 10 days.

Circle M cited for food handling and date marking

Circle M Food Shop #46, 1662 E. Alexander Love Hwy. in York, received a B (85) on Oct. 26. Inspectors found raw shell eggs stored above sliced cheese and an employee touching their hair or face with gloves on without changing gloves and washing hands. A food-preparation handwashing sink was blocked by containers.

Opened packages of hot dogs, meatballs, pulled pork, chopped boiled eggs and pasta sauce lacked required date markings, leaving discard dates undetermined. The blocked sink and date-marking issues were identified as consecutive violations; the latter could be referred for enforcement. Inspectors also cited old labels on food containers, ice and dust buildup and unavailable food-safety certificates. Several problems were corrected during the inspection. A follow-up was required within 10 days.

Two Clover establishments return to A

Taverna Italian American Bistro, which received a B (81) on Oct. 15, earned an A in an Oct. 22 follow-up. Shriti & Rudravi Clover LLC, which received a B (97) on Oct. 15, earned an A on Oct. 21. The new listing does not provide numerical scores for either A-grade follow-up.
