Earth Fare Deli received a C on follow-up, while Dave’s Hot Chicken, John Boys and Charanda of Newport were graded B during Aug. 19–24 inspections
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture conducted 56 food establishment inspections in York County and the surrounding coverage area from Aug. 19 through Aug. 24. Most establishments received A grades, but four inspections stood out with grades below A.
The most significant was Earth Fare Deli in Rock Hill, which received a C during a follow-up inspection after receiving a B the previous week. Dave’s Hot Chicken in Rock Hill and John Boys in Fort Mill received B grades on follow-up inspections, while Charanda of Newport in Rock Hill received a B during a routine inspection before improving to an A two days later.
🔴 Earth Fare Deli — C, 91
Earth Fare Deli, 725 Cherry Road, Rock Hill — C, 91 — Aug. 20 — Follow-up
Earth Fare Deli was downgraded to a C after inspectors found several priority violations from its Aug. 13 routine inspection remained unresolved.
The deli had received a B with a score of 82 on Aug. 13.
During the Aug. 20 follow-up, inspectors reported that a handwashing sink near the three-compartment sink still lacked a way for employees to dry their hands. Sanitizer at the three-compartment sink tested at 0 parts per million.
Inspectors also reported that butane containers and cleaning products remained stored with food products at a bakery preparation table. Personal items and over-the-counter medication were also stored at a bakery prep table.
The report states the facility was downgraded to a C because priority violations remained outstanding. Another follow-up inspection was required.
🟠 Dave's Hot Chicken — B, 92
Dave's Hot Chicken, 2476 Cherry Road, Rock Hill — B, 92 — Aug. 24 — Follow-up
Dave's Hot Chicken received a B after inspectors found chicken in a cook-line reach-in cooler at 45 degrees, above the required cold-holding temperature.
The violation was not corrected during the inspection and required verification. Inspectors said the restaurant was downgraded to a B because the cold-holding problem remained unresolved at the follow-up.
Inspectors also observed organic buildup inside soda-machine nozzles and reported that the drive-up window was not self-closing. Another follow-up was required.
🟠 Charanda of Newport — B, 85
Charanda of Newport, 4811 Old York Road, Rock Hill — B, 85 — Aug. 19 — Routine
Charanda of Newport received a B during its Aug. 19 routine inspection.
Inspectors reported salsa at 46 degrees and diced tomatoes on a tableside guacamole cart at 61 degrees. Containers of cooked and cooled mole and ranchero sauces were being held beyond their disposition dates. Those violations were corrected.
Inspectors also found stickers and sticker residue on dishes stored as clean, a consecutive violation that was not corrected during the inspection and could be referred for enforcement.
Other findings included an unlabeled spray bottle of cleaning solution, first-aid supplies stored above a food-preparation table and drain flies around the bar area.
A follow-up was conducted Aug. 21, when Charanda improved to an A grade.
🟠 John Boys — B, 98
John Boys, 140 Spratt Street, Fort Mill — B, 98 — Aug. 21 — Follow-up
John Boys received a B despite scoring 98 because of a consecutive plumbing violation.
Inspectors reported that the restaurant still lacked required backflow prevention at its mop sink. The violation was not corrected, and the report specifically states the establishment was downgraded to a B because of the consecutive violation.
No additional follow-up was required.
