The South Carolina Department of Agriculture conducted 80 food establishment inspections in York County and the surrounding coverage area from Aug. 26 through Sept. 1. Most establishments received A grades, with one inspection resulting in a B and one in a C.

La Calentana/Victor Cafe in Fort Mill received a C during a follow-up inspection despite scoring 98, while Piggly Wiggly #149 Market in Clover received a B during a routine inspection. Three establishments that received grades below A the previous week — Earth Fare Deli, Dave's Hot Chicken and John Boys — returned to A grades during follow-up inspections.

Inspectors reported that the establishment was still dumping gray water from its food truck into an unsecured connection on the side of the building. The priority violation had not been corrected.

The Department of Agriculture said the establishment was downgraded to a C because the truck continued to use the unsecured connection to dispose of gray water. Another follow-up inspection was required within 10 days.

Piggly Wiggly #149 Market received a B during an Aug. 28 routine inspection.

Inspectors observed an employee washing hands in the meat department's three-compartment sink and produce being cut and packaged without gloves. Cut tomatoes, pineapple, carrots and watermelon, along with rope sausage and pork ribs, were being held beyond their labeled disposition dates.

The bare-hand contact and date-marking violations were corrected during the inspection, while the improper handwashing violation was not corrected and required verification.

Inspectors also reported dead flies in a dairy case, excess ice buildup in a produce walk-in freezer, organic growth on the meat department ceiling and ceiling tiles throughout the facility in poor repair.

The report noted that all observed cold-holding temperatures were 41 degrees or below. A follow-up inspection was required within 10 days.

Three establishments highlighted in the previous week's report returned to A grades during follow-up inspections.

Earth Fare Deli, 725 Cherry Road in Rock Hill, received an A on Aug. 27, one week after receiving a C during a follow-up inspection. The deli had received a B on Aug. 13 before being downgraded to C on Aug. 20 because priority violations remained unresolved.

Dave's Hot Chicken, 2476 Cherry Road in Rock Hill, returned to an A on Aug. 31. The restaurant received a B with a score of 92 during an Aug. 24 follow-up after a cold-holding violation remained unresolved.

John Boys, 140 Spratt Street in Fort Mill, returned to an A on Aug. 28. The restaurant had received a B with a score of 98 on Aug. 21 because of a consecutive backflow-prevention violation at its mop sink.
