York County Restaurant Inspections: Hickory Tavern Receives B Grade on Follow-Up

Here’s the completed Sept. 2–8 report in the same format. The period had 71 inspections: 70 A grades and one B grade, with no C grades.

Hickory Tavern was the only establishment receiving a grade below A among 71 inspections conducted Sept. 2–8

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture conducted 71 food establishment inspections in York County and the surrounding coverage area from Sept. 2 through Sept. 8. All but one resulted in A grades.

Hickory Tavern in Rock Hill received a B during a follow-up inspection after inspectors found a pest-control violation remained unresolved. Meanwhile, La Calentana/Victor Cafe and Piggly Wiggly #149 Market, the two establishments receiving grades below A in the previous week's report, both returned to A grades during follow-up inspections.

Hickory Tavern received a B with a score of 96 during a Sept. 8 follow-up inspection because a priority pest-control violation remained unresolved.

Inspectors reported drain flies at the mop sink, around the bar and near the dish pit. The violation was not corrected during the inspection and required verification.

Inspectors also found organic matter on shelving in dry storage and in the walk-in cooler, along with a missing vent cover over the dish machine.

The Department of Agriculture said the restaurant was downgraded because of the continuing priority violation. Another follow-up inspection was required within 10 days.

Two establishments highlighted in the previous week's report returned to A grades during follow-up inspections.

La Calentana/Victor Cafe, 3674 Highway 51 in Fort Mill, received an A on Sept. 2, five days after receiving a C with a score of 98. The establishment had been downgraded during its Aug. 28 follow-up because a priority violation involving disposal of gray water into an unsecured connection remained unresolved.

Piggly Wiggly #149 Market, 136 S. Main Street in Clover, received an A on Sept. 3 after receiving a B with a score of 85 during its Aug. 28 routine inspection. That inspection included violations involving improper handwashing, bare-hand contact with produce and food held beyond labeled disposition dates.
