My name is Lanie Cauthen and I’m from Lancaster, SC. I’m a senior at Winthrop University earning my Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications with a minor in Film. I’ve grown up next to York County my entire life, so I’ve had a close connection to the area – especially the town of Rock Hill. I am looking forward to this new project with York County Agenda.
During my junior year of high school, I signed up for my high school’s journalism program which sparked my interest in writing. I loved interviewing and writing stories about people. Features were always my favorite to write because I enjoyed getting to know about people’s lives and stories. I learned a lot during my time there and loved the experience.
After becoming editor-in-chief of my school’s publication, I started writing for my local paper in 2023. I wrote anything from feature stories to town council coverage. I was able to work on impactful stories that not only highlighted local events but also showcased the work of community members across the county. This was a wonderful experience that developed my skills as a freelancer.
During my time in high school, I earned my Associate’s of Arts from University of South Carolina: Lancaster through a dual enrollment program. I graduated high school in 2024 as valedictorian and began my journey at Winthrop.
I learned more about journalism at Winthrop – such as video, editing, reporting, and research. I joined two of the university’s student publications and eventually became editor-in-chief of the multicultural magazine on campus. I would go on to win first place at the 2026 South Carolina Press Association Awards for an art and entertainment story. I would intern with the Post & Courier: York County to learn more about the advertising industry. I studied abroad in England this past spring – where I focused on marketing communications. Today, I am interning at Springs Creative and the Post & Courier.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love watching movies – especially Star Wars or anything old Hollywood. I also enjoy watching tv, listening to music, and reading in my free time. As for hobbies, I love playing with my dog, antiquing, and going to concerts. When not working, you’ll find me rewatching some of my favorite movies in a band t-shirt.
Since I’ve started writing, I’ve always enjoyed the human connection that journalism brings to not only the subjects, but the readers as well. I believe when you read about people doing good, it inspires you to do good as well. I also believe it’s important to learn about the people around you in order to build connections with your community – and this is what inspires me to write. Some of the first ever stories I wrote focused on members of my community, so I’m excited to continue to write people-focused stories because it really is my passion. I am excited to be a part of this new publication and I’m looking forward to this new journey.
